The Natura Communities website is a hub for accessing information about blanket bogs in Ireland, why they should be conserved and protected, and what local communities can do to support this work. Through this hub we aim to engage with and support the work of communities in conserving local habitats and in particular improving the conservation status of blanket bog SACs within the Wild Atlantic Nature project areas in Ireland’s northwest.
This website details the background to the Natura 2000 network, why blanket bogs are important, the threats that impact bogs and what types of restoration measures can be undertaken. Restoration works will ensure bogs can continue to benefit communities that live in and around them for many years to come. The community resources section provides information about funding and training opportunities, as well as highlighting some of the excellent work undertaken by communities around Ireland in relation to the sustainable management of habitats, nature conservation and restoration activities.
We hope that this website can provide the necessary background information required to inspire your community in getting started on the pathway to protecting and conserving our precious blanket bogs.
Natura Communities is supported by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
